Mary Spencer

Retired Teacher
West Intermediate & Logan School in Waterloo, Iowa

Mary Spencer was born in Waterloo, Iowa. Her parents lived at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, before Mrs. Spencer was born. She narrates the story of the racism that her extended family encountered while living in Mt. Pleasant. She points out that despite the racism, several members of the family pressed on and obtained teaching degrees from the local college. Before coming to Waterloo, Mrs. Spencer’s parents lived in a coal-mining town called Buxton. In the context of Iowa, Buxton was unique at the time for having a large African-American population. It existed from 1900 to approximately 1925. Her family made Waterloo their home in the late 1920s, where Mrs. Spencer grew up and retired as a teacher from Logan Middle School.
