Anna Mae Weems Civil Rights Activist First African American woman to be employed as Director of the Iowa Workforce Center, State of Iowa Anna Mae Weems is a native of Waterloo. She actively participated in the Civil Rights Movement. She marched and protested against racial discrimination. She quickly rose as a civil rights activist and community leader in Waterloo. Her outspoken nature made her an ideal activist, who remained steadfast under pressure and when the stakes were high. She voices for racial justice and equality rights loud and clear. She discusses her relationship with national civil rights leaders with whom she collaborated. She was at the front of local efforts to fight racial discrimination in employment and education in Waterloo. She challenged major businesses that were slow to enforce government mandates on affirmative action. She started educational programs for the young people and encouraged them to remain in schools.
